Oceanic mass loads are derived from 3-hourly non-tidal ocean bottom pressure given on a regular 1.0° x 1.0° global grid from the ocean model MPIOM (same model configuration as for AOD1B RL06). Oceanic tides were removed by harmonic analysis of 12 major tidal constituents. Non-tidal ocean bottom pressure is resampled on a regular 0.125°x0.125° global grid.

The operational ECMWF model is typically updated about two times a year to incorporate the most recent improvements in the numerical scheme, the physical model or the data assimilation procedures into the system for steadily improving daily weather forecasting quality. Such changes frequently affect the long-term stability of meteorological quantities in the ECMWF deterministic model, but this operational model data is available in near real-time with substantially higher spatial resolution than the alternatively available atmospheric re-analyses data sets.

Harmonized Atmospheric Surface Pressure Time-Series:
The surface pressure time-series from ECMWF reanalysis ERA-40, ERA-Interim, and operational ECMWF were projected onto a time-invariant reference topography under consideration of the time-variable atmospheric density structure. This approach allows to use the latest data from the operational ECMWF deterministic model maintaining at the same time the long-term stability of re-analysis data sets.

In future, we will use this harmonized atmospheric data sets, updated in near real-time, as consistent basis for the forcing of our ocean model MPIOM, the hydrological model LSDM and all our derived products, such as GRACE AOD, hydrological loading, non-tidal atmospheric loading and non-tidal oceanic loading.

For atmospheric loading the atmospheric tides were removed by harmonic analysis of 12 major tidal constituents.
